Khardaha, also called Khardah or Kharda, is a city and municipality of Barrackpore subdivision in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority.

Geography

Khardaha is located at 22.72°N 88.38°E / 22.72; 88.38. It has an average elevation of 15 m (49 ft). It is a railway station on the Sealdah-Ranaghat section, sandwiched between Sodepur (to the south) and Titagarh (to the north). The railway station divides the city into two parts - the eastern part is known as Rahara, while the western part is known as Khardaha.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census, Khardaha had a population of 108,496. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Khardaha has an average literacy rate of 95.50%, higher than the national average of 74.04%: male literacy is 96.20%, and female literacy is 92.50%. In Khardaha, 6.78% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Education systems

Khardaha is famous for its Ramnakrishna Mission. Its popularly known as Rahara Mission, and it is a part of the great Ramakrishna Math and Mission franchise established by Swami Vivekananda in memory of his Principal Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. The school has class 1 to 12 (Higher secondary) and the teaching medium is both Bangla and English. It is a all boys' school . Khardaha also has an all boys' college which is called, Vivekananda Centenary college, Part of Ramakrishna Math and Mission. Both undergraduate and graduate courses are taught. But, only Science subjects are taught here . An all girls' school is located right by the side of Rahara Mission, called, Bhabhanath Institution for Girls. This is one ofe the best schools in the region . Kalyannagar Vidyapeeth, another school is also located in the area .

Religious matters

The most famous temple in this region is called Shyam er bari or Shyamsundar temple, or the temple for the Lord Krishna, located on the riverside of the Ganges . Another temple called HariSabha is also dedicated to Lord Krishna, situated near the Railway station .

Health

Khardaha Municipal hospital or Balaram sevamandir is the main Govt. funded hospital in Khardaha . There are lots of private medical dispensaries with their own doctors and specialists can be found all over the town.

Culture

Every year in the month of December, Khardaha municipality organizes Flower show . Also, Khardaha utsav is organized on a regular basis, where singers from all over India come to entertain people . Khardaha book fair is another culturally significant event that happens every year .
